2016/08/02

On August 1, 2016, Vice Premier Liu Yandong co-chaired in Guiyang the 2nd meeting of the cultural and people-to-people exchange mechanism between China and Indonesia at the vice premier's level with Coordinating Minister of Human Development and Culture Puan Maharani of Indonesia.

Liu Yandong expressed that the cultural and people-to-people exchange mechanism between China and Indonesia at the vice premier's level was established at the joint proposal of President Xi Jinping and President Joko Widodo. It is the first high-level cultural and people-to-people exchange mechanism between China and developing countries. Under the planning and coordination of the mechanism, both sides have achieved fruitful results over the past year in 8 areas of education, science and technology, culture, health, sports, tourism, youth, and media.

Liu Yandong pointed out that as both China and Indonesia are at the key period of development, cooperation potential in promoting regional prosperity and stability is huge. To advance the effective docking between the "Belt and Road" initiative and development strategies of Indonesia as well as the construction of the ASEAN community, both sides should continuously deepen bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges and create an open and inclusive "soft environment". The two sides should adopt strategic thinking and take a long-term perspective to make people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Indonesia an ideal example of China-ASEAN cooperation in accordance with the concepts of institutionalization, branding and popularization, and inject more "positive energy" and "warm strength" into promoting the development of bilateral relations and regional prosperity as well as stability.

Puan Maharani spoke highly of the role of Indonesia-China cultural and people-to-people exchange mechanism, and suggested to well utilize this major platform to deepen bilateral cooperation in related areas and assist the development of bilateral relations. Indonesia is willing to strengthen cooperation with China, so as to continuously push forward ASEAN-China relations.

Before the meeting, Liu Yandong and Puan Maharani held a small-scale meeting. After the meeting, the two sides jointly witnessed the signing of eight cooperation agreements covering education, science and technology, culture, forestry as well as other areas.
